Business VPN Connection Troubleshooting
Quick steps to resolve common connection errors, credential prompts, or speed issues when using the company VPN.
If you are working remotely and having trouble connecting to your company’s network via the VPN, follow these quick diagnostic steps.
Step 1: Verify Internet Connectivity
A stable internet connection is required to establish a VPN tunnel.
- Disconnect from the VPN.
- Open a web browser and try to load a public site like
google.comorfast.com. - If pages do not load, troubleshoot your local Wi-Fi or router before trying to reconnect to the VPN.
Step 2: Restart the VPN Agent
Sometimes the local VPN client service hangs and needs a reset:
- On Windows: Right-click the VPN client icon (e.g., FortiClient, Cisco AnyConnect) in the system tray, select Quit, then open it again from the Start Menu.
- On macOS: Click the VPN icon in the top menu bar, select Quit, and relaunch the application from Applications.
Step 3: Check Credentials and MFA
Many VPN connections require Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
- Double-check that your password is correct.
- After entering your credentials, look at your registered mobile device for an MFA prompt (e.g., Duo, Microsoft Authenticator).
- If the MFA token expires before you finish entering it, try again and approve the notification immediately.
Step 4: Flush DNS Cache
Corrupt local network cache can block the VPN domain resolution.
- On Windows:
- Open the Start Menu, type
cmd, and open Command Prompt. - Type
ipconfig /flushdnsand press Enter.
- Open the Start Menu, type
- On macOS:
- Open Terminal.
- Type
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponderand press Enter (requires your Mac admin password).
