Common Microsoft Outlook Troubleshooting Tips

Resolve common email glitches like Outlook hanging, profile synchronization errors, or starting Outlook in Safe Mode.

If Microsoft Outlook is running slowly, not receiving new emails, or failing to launch entirely, these common troubleshooting steps can resolve the issue in most cases.

Step 1: Start Outlook in Safe Mode

Starting Outlook in Safe Mode disables all third-party add-ins, which are the most common cause of application crashes.

  1. Press Windows Key + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog.
  2. Type outlook.exe /safe and click OK.
  3. If Outlook opens and runs normally in Safe Mode, a disabled add-in is likely the culprit. You can disable add-ins permanently via File > Options > Add-ins > Go… next to COM Add-ins.

Step 2: Check for a Full Mailbox

If you are no longer receiving or sending emails, your mailbox limit may have been reached.

  1. Click File in the top left corner of Outlook.
  2. Under Mailbox Settings, check the progress bar showing your mailbox storage limit.
  3. If it is full, empty your Deleted Items folder and archive older emails to free up space.

Step 3: Run the Office Repair Tool

If Outlook continues to freeze or close randomly, you can run a quick self-repair:

  1. Close all Microsoft Office programs.
  2. Open the Windows Control Panel or Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  3. Scroll down and locate your Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office installation.
  4. Click the three dots next to it (or click Change) and select Modify.
  5. Select Quick Repair (takes a few minutes) and click Repair.

Step 4: Recreate the Outlook Profile

If your inbox is completely out of sync, recreating your mail profile forces Outlook to download a fresh copy of your mailbox from the server.

  1. Close Outlook.
  2. Open Control Panel and search for Mail in the search box.
  3. Click Show Profiles, select your profile, and click Remove (Note: ensure your email protocol is Exchange or IMAP so your mail is backed up on the mail server!).
  4. Click Add, enter a new profile name, and follow the prompts to sign back into your email account.
